Tips : take it or leave it!
- Start as Soon as Possible :
- Ideally, put your baby to the breast within the first hour after birth. This promotes milk production and strengthens the bond between you and your baby.
- Adopt a Good Position:
- Ensure your baby is well-positioned, with their tummy against your tummy, mouth wide open, and lips flanged out around the areola, not just the nipple.
- Breastfeed on Demand:
- Feed your baby whenever they show signs of hunger (fidgeting, sucking on hands, head movements toward the breast) rather than following a strict schedule.
- Ensure Proper Breast Drainage:
- Let your baby nurse on one side until the breast is well-drained before switching to the other. This ensures the baby receives the fat-rich hindmilk at the end of the feeding.
- Take Care of Your Breasts:
- After each feeding, let a bit of milk dry on your nipples to prevent cracking. You can also use specific creams if needed.
- Eat and Drink Well:
- A balanced diet and sufficient hydration are crucial for maintaining good milk production. Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine.
- Rest as Much as Possible:
- Try to sleep when your baby sleeps. Lack of sleep can affect your milk production and overall well-being.
- Be Patient and Persistent:
- The first few weeks can be challenging, but it usually gets easier over time. Seek support if you need it.
- Get Help if Necessary:
- If you encounter problems, do not hesitate to consult a lactation consultant, midwife, or pediatrician.
- Listen to Your Baby and Your Body:
- Every mother-baby pair is unique. What works for another mother and her baby may not be right for you. Trust your instincts and adapt to what works best for you.
